-->

NEW BRITAIN — Brandon Waring snapped a tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Lester Oliveros pitched a 1-2-3 ninth as the New Britain Rock Cats clipped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3 in an Eastern League matinee Friday at New Britain Stadium.

The victory, coming less than 24 hours after New Britain rapped out 13 hits to beat Richmond 10-2 on Thursday night, as the Rock Cats off to a 2-0 start.

On Friday, New Britain erased an early 1-0 deficit in the fourth when Reynaldo Rodriguez doubled home Nate Hanson, who had led off the frame with a single.

Richmond rebuilt a 3-1 lead only to see the Rock Cats rally again in the sixth. Three walks by Richmond reliever Bryce Bandilla led to the two New Britain runs.

Waring’s game-winning homer in the eighth cleared the left field wall. Oliveros, who has pitched at the Major League level for both Detroit and Minnesota, slammed the door in the ninth to earn his first save.

Ryan O’Rourke earned the win in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one over 1 1/3 innings of work.

The Rock Cats and Flying Squirrels tangle again this afternoon at 1:35 p.m. It will be a battle of southpaws as New Britain’s Taylor Rogers faces Adalberto Mejia.
